How To Insert A Hyperlink

  1. Select the text or image that you would like to use as your link. (This is the text or image a person actually clicks on to activate the link.)
  2. Choose a protocol for the link. There are lots of different types of links. If you don't know what all the different protools do, don't worry. If you are linking to another webpage, use http://.
  3. Click in the URL or selected file box and place your cursor after the protocol prefix.
  4. Enter the rest of the web address, (url) of the site you want to link to.
  5. Check Open Link in a New Window.
  6. Click OK

What Do All Those Protocols Do?

ftp://

FTP stands for file transfer protocol. FTP is used for transferring files from computer to computer.

http://

HTTP stands for hypertext transfer protocol. It is the protocol used for most webpages.

https://

HTTPS is used for websites that have been given an additional layer of security through encryption.

mailto:

Mailto links open the email program on a computer and automatically enter a specific email address into the To field. For example, if you wanted to create a link that sends mail to TAC, you would write: mailto:tac@nvcc.edu.

news:

News: opens your newsreader.

telnet://

Telnet is used to communicate directly with another computer, and- possibly- control it from a remote location.
