1. Microsoft Office 2007 New File Type Formats
MS Office 2007 documents/files are saved with a new and different file type format than earlier versions of MS Office saved document/files. The new and different file format is
1) Based on XML
2) Called Microsoft Office Open XML Format
3) Applies to MS Office 2007 Word, Excel and PowerPoint
So, MS Office 2007 users who want to send/share files with earlier MS Office version users will have to save their documents/files with an earlier MS Office version file type.

2. Other Ways to Convert Files
You may open, edit and save documents, workbook and presentation files in the file formats new to MS Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2007 using Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2007 Files Formats software application.
Remember: Working with a document created in a previous version of Word is easy in Microsoft Office Word 2007. You can open an earlier document in MS Office Word 2007 and then work in the Compatibility Mode to leave the document in the earlier format.
