Word Processing Alternatives

If your students do not have access to a Word Processing Software, consider this option:

Google Docs & Spreadsheets (http://docs.google.com) is a free online office tool that opens, edits, and saves documents of varying types, and allows saving as PDF.

Windows Media Video on MACS

If your course uses video and you have students using MACs, they need a plug-in
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx in order to view the videos in QuickTime.  It is called flip4mac. You can download it from www.flip4mac.com

Save files as RTF's

Rich Text Format can be opened and edited by anyone on any computer and provides the basic formatting features needed for most documents however, be aware of limitations some formats may have. RTF and other "sharable" file formats may not support some of the more extensive formatting options.

Respondus Lockdown Browser Setting

If an instructor uses Respondus to create their test. When the instructor uploads the test to Blackboard they select LockDown Browser.

The Respondus 3.5 exam authoring tool must be used to prepare a Blackboard Basic Edition test for use with Respondus LockDown Browser. Follow these instructions:
1. Start Respondus 3.5 or higher.
2. Determine if the "Institution ID" for your institution has been entered in Respondus:
In Respondus, select File from the menu bar.
 Select LockDown Browser.

By using the LockDown Browser feature, students cannot use ANY OTHER BROWSER to access the test. They must install the Lock Down Browser on their computer to take the test from home. This is also a free download for any of our students.

When they go to take the test, they are prompted for a password given to them by the instructor THAT IS ONLY RECOGNIZED by the Lock Down Browser.
