All students are assigned Blackboard accounts and usernames, but Blackboard is not integrated with the student information system, so students who register for your class must be added to the Blackboard class. You can either add students yourself or request the Blackboard administrator to batch enroll them for you. If the System Administrator batch enrolls your students for you, you may still have to adjust your roster if a student adds or drops your class.

It is helpful to know the student's Blackboard username when you enroll them. It is possible to add students by last name, but more difficult. NVCC shares Blackboard with the rest of the Virginia Community College System, so if you try to search for a student named "Smith," Blackboard will find every student or faculty member named Smith in the entire Virginia Community College System. You can retrieve the student's username from either NovaConnect or the BBrolls page.


How To Request A Batch Enroll:

The NVCC Blackboard Administrator, Michelle Gee, can automatically enroll your students for you, based on the students in the BBRolls lists. Please provide the following information to Michelle Gee at mgee@nvcc.edu:

  1. List of Blackboard course IDs (the 16-character unique identifier for a Bb course - ex. NVENG111CS1NFA02)
  2. Corresponding course#/section# for each Bb course
  3. Your name and email

  1. Log into Blackboard and open a course.
  2. Go to the Control Panel.
  3. Click Enroll User in the User Management pane.
  4. Select Search By Username.
  5. Either type or copy and paste the student's username into the search box.
  6. Once done, click on the Search button that is located to the right.
  7. Once the information on the student appears, make sure you click on the check box located to the left of the name to select it, and then click the Submit button located on the right of the page.
  8. When you see the Success message appear, click on the Add Users link near the top of the page to select your next student.

How to Remove A Student From a Course:

  1. Log into Blackboard and open your course.
  2. Go to the Control Panel.
  3. Click Remove Users From Course.
  4. Click the List All tab.
  5. Click the List All button.
  6. Place a Checkmark next to the names of the students you wish to remove.
  7. Type "Yes" into the box at the bottom of the page.
  8. Click Submit.
  9. Click OK to return to the Control Panel.

Tips:

  • If you choose to add students manually in Blackbaord by last name, remember that NVCC share Blackboard with the entire Virginia Community College System. If you search for a student named, "Smith", Blackboard will display every faculty member and student named Smith in the entire Virginia Community College System.
  • Should a "Not found" error message appear, this means the student is already enrolled in Blackboard.
